November 15th Newspaper Column

As you all know, the Caestecker Public Library is part of a library system called Winnefox that covers the libraries in Green Lake, Fond du Lac, Marquette, Waushara, and Winnebago Counties. Your library card is valid at all of these libraries, and you can easily request books and movies and music from any of them to be delivered here. It’s a great system, and Green Lake folks can access a whole bunch of titles we just can’t afford to purchase (or have space for) locally.

Last week there was a change to the way materials will be available for library patrons. Winnefox has requested that all member libraries make all their books and movies available to everyone right away. Which means no more "for local holds only" on our newest purchases. If you routinely place holds for new titles you may not notice any difference. But if, like many, you usually just come in to browse and see what happens to be available, you probably won't see many brand new items on display - they may be off filling holds at other Winnefox libraries.

To be sure you get the books and movies you want you will need to put the items on hold. Library staff are happy to help you with that. DIYers can place holds online through the library website, And there is a nifty service called the Favorite Author Club that you can sign up for through the web catalog. You can choose from among over 90 authors, and have holds automatically placed in the format you choose on their new titles. We are happy to help you with that, too. We have a list of the included authors available at the checkout desk – just mark those you like, tell us the format (print book, large print book, or audio book) you prefer, and we can either walk you through the process or do the sign-up for you. Not all my favorite authors are included on the list, but there are quite a few who regularly appear on the best seller lists.

The other bit of news this week is just a reminder that the library will be closed next Thursday for Thanksgiving. We will reopen at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, as usual. Feel free to use us as your refuge from Black Friday shopping!
