WWI Special Event - Mary Unger of Ripon College

Ernest Hemmingway and the Great War

Ripon College Assistant Professor of English Mary Unger is here this evening to look at WWI from a literary aspect. Her talk will explore Ernest Hemingway's experiences in WWI as an ambulance driver and consider how the author used literature--specifically about the Midwestern landscape--as a way to cope with the trauma of the war. The discussion will draw on the Hemmingway's personal letters, short fiction, photographs, and other memorabilia.
