June 20th Newspaper Column

Welcome to summer!

It is so good to see our summer families coming back. The children’s area is busier now that all the schools are out, and just this morning another author contacted me who wants to visit the library in July. Doesn’t get much better than that.

Unless you’re a fan of library ice cream socials. Our annual yummy kickoff to the summer reading program is happening this Sunday afternoon, June 23, from 1-4:00. Build your own sundae, or take your pick from a variety of flavors for an ice cream float. It’s a great time to sign kids up for the summer reading program, see friends and neighbors, try your hand at a contest or two, and maybe even get in a little shopping. That’s right - the Friends are having a flash book sale that afternoon. We’ve received a lot of very nice book donations the past few weeks, and the Friends just couldn’t wait to share them with you.

We have a special program for parents on Tuesday evening, June 25, on EdVest, Wisconsin’s 529 college savings plan. Catherine Burdick, the 529 College Savings Program Manager at TIAA-CREF will be here to present “Planning for College with Edvest” at 6:30 p.m. Participants will learn about plan improvements from 2012 including lower costs, unique tax advantages for Wisconsin residents, and how easy it is to get started planning for college costs. EdVest has teamed up with the Green Bay Packers this summer to promote summer reading as well as saving for college, and are backing the program with prizes. Find out more at Tuesday night’s program or by visiting www.Edvest.com/reading

We’re just getting warmed up – wait till you see what’s happening here in July!
