March 28th Newspaper Column

Spring Break, Easter, April Fool’s, Brewers Opening Day – how much fun can we cram into one week? Turns out – lots!

First some business, though. Because of the Easter holiday, the library has special hours this weekend. We will be open 9:00 – 1:00  on Good Friday (March 29), 9:00 – 1:00 as usual on Holy Saturday, and we will be closed on Easter Sunday, March 31.

Now that we have the schedule figured out – on to the fun. We’ve started a Picture Book Challenge for children birth through age eight. The Caestecker Library staff has put together a list of 101 picture books that we really like and are challenging Green Lake area children to read all of them. We also want to know if the kids agree with us, so we’re asking them to let us know what they like about each book. When a child completes all 101, they will receive a special prize. Stop in the library any time to sign up and receive your list. Are you up to the challenge?

Monday, April 1st is the first day seeds will be available to borrow from our brand new seed library. This first year we are starting small, with limited varieties of heirloom and open-pollinated veggies, herbs, and flowers whose seeds are easy to save. There is a short enrollment form, which entitles you to check out up to three packets of seeds to grow this year.  Gardeners are asked to plant their seeds, keep notes on how well they grew, and return some cleaned seeds to the library at the end of the season. More information can be found on the seed library’s Facebook page – search for Green Lake Seed Library. We will be having gardening-related workshops throughout the spring and summer for those who wish to learn more about growing and using heirloom garden plants.

Home schooled children in the equivalent of grades three through eight and who reside within the boundaries of the Green Lake School District are invited to participate in the annual Celest King Poetry Contest sponsored by the Dartford Education Club. These students’ entries should be dropped off at the Caestecker Library’s main desk no later than Monday, April 8th.

Movie buffs will want to note that we will be screening Les Miserables on Tuesday night, April 2nd, at 6:30. As always, popcorn will be provided. We plan to continue Tuesday night movies right through the month of April. I hope you can join us.
