These last weeks of August are transition weeks here at the library, and they always make me feel a bit melancholy. August is a month of goodbyes – to our kids going off (or returning) to college (good luck Josh, Thomas, Annelise, and Noah), to summer patrons scattering back across the nation, and to our extended summer hours. Our families affiliated with Peace Lutheran and WLA see their students return to the classroom this week. And while we’ve been more than happy to bid adieu to the blazing temperatures and drought, we feel for the farmers and gardeners who lost so much to this summer’s extremes.
Lest you think it’s all gloom at the library, though, let me assure you that we continue to receive new books and movies every week. Fans of television series from House to NCIS to Revenge will be happy to know they are on order and heading to the library. Publishers are gearing up for the fall publishing push (many, many books come out in September and October to catch the holiday buying season). The turtles are loving their tank renovation. And we have a wonderful teen volunteer helping us out a couple days every week. Next time you’re in and notice a younger-than-your-average-library-worker behind the desk, please say hello to Cynnara.
