Ladies and Gentlemen – we have an elevator!

After years of wishing and planning and work and an extremely generous donation from Mr. Caestecker, the library now has elevator service between the main floor and the lower level. We passed the state inspection last Wednesday and the city building inspector gave her approval on Thursday afternoon. We expect to have plenty of opportunities for Green Lake residents and visitors to make use of our new lift over the coming years.

Have you had the opportunity to stop in to view the “Fur, Feathers, and Fidelity: Military Mascots” exhibit yet? If not, may I suggest you come to the library on Saturday morning, March 21? That’s when local legion members Mark Kramer and Jerry Basket will be here relating stories of the mascots they worked alongside in Vietnam. Mark’s army unit had adopted a stray dog, while Jerry’s naval mascot was a monkey. The men’s presentation will begin at 10:00 a.m. in the library’s meeting room, where you’ll also find the exhibit.

We have a very special exhibit in the library meeting room from March 9-27. “Fur, Feathers, and Fidelity: Military Mascots” introduces some of the birds, dogs, monkeys, and other animals that have served alongside Wisconsin troops as far back as the American Civil War. From the well-known (Old Abe, the War Eagle) to the anonymous pup cuddled up to his exhausted soldier, the critters who accompanied our soldiers, sailors, and marines brought a bit of normalcy (or at least a diversion) in wartime.
