COPA Decision

Internet News Article | Reuters.com

Reuters reports that on Tuesday the Supreme Court "barred enforcement of a 1998 federal law designed to keep Internet pornography away from minors because it likely violates constitutional free-speech rights." COPA (Child Online Protection Act) was written to protect minors from online pornography through the use of credit cards and access codes. However, the majority of the Court in a 5-4 decision, agreed with Justice Kennedy, "Content-based prohibitions, enforced by severe criminal penalties, have the constant potential to be a repressive force in the lives and thoughts of a free people."

Luddite Librarian

Luddite Librarian

I'm not sure what the Luddite Librarian would think about all of the blog postings about their blog, but it is worth posting about. Very important questions are asked at each post, questioning things like constant reposting (which is what this is I suppose) and the overuse of PowerPoint in presentations.

Even though I consider myself a techie librarian, I found myself giving a speech about the future of libraries that did not focus on new technology but rather on traditional services. So perhaps I have a bit of the Luddite Librarian in me as well.

IE6 and XP Users Beware!

IIS, IE exploit unleashed

Here is a new security flaw that may affect some libraries as well as home Internet users. The flaw affects computers running Windows XP, and using Internet Explorer 6. If you are not running both of those in conjunction, you have nothing to worry about with this flaw.

If you are running both, you need to download the latest patches from Microsoft. The flaw allows exploitation where JavaScript is used to redirect your browser to a Russian site where an executable file is downloaded and executed. Then a keystroke logger is installed on the machine.

Fahrenheit 9/11

Coming Soon! - Latest News

Another victory against censorship!

"Michael Moore's new controversial documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 topped the box office with an impressive $21.8 million from just 868 screens. The film averaged a big $25,115 per screen, which is the third highest average of the year behind only Mel Gibson's The Passion of The Christ and DreamWorks' Shrek 2. The opening also marks the highest ever for a documentary of any type (including IMAX and concert films), is the biggest opening for a wide release under 1,000 screens (beating previous record holder Rocky III in 1982), is the best opening ever for a Palme d'Or winner (topping previous record holder Pulp Fiction in 1994), and the film has already outgrossed the $21.6 million total box office for Moore's Academy Award-winning Bowling for Columbine. The film's distributors will expand the movie for Fourth of July weekend and again on Friday, July 9."

Weeding Gone Awry?

Edmonton Journal

In Edmonton, Alberta, a school librarian took books to the dumpster. Shocking? Not really, just weeding books from the 1960s. But that wasn't a good enough reason for one of the teens at the school and now the books are being taken out of the dumpster and re-examined. It seems at the very least, the kid wants them recycled, but the paper seems to be defending some of the books from being weeded. Never mind the fact that the most recent of them mentioned in the article was printed in 1970.

All I can say is please, please don't donate them to the public library!
