Bush signed parts of Patriot Act II into effect on the day of Hussein's capture. The following quote from the article tells of the ramifications:
"...the Bush administration is ramping up provisions within the 2001 USA Patriot Act, which granted the FBI the authority to obtain client records from banks by merely requesting the records in a "National Security Letter." To get the records, the FBI doesn't have to appear before a judge, nor demonstrate "probable cause" - reason to believe that the targeted client is involved in criminal or terrorist activity. Moreover, the National Security Letters are attached with a gag order, preventing any financial institution from informing its clients that their records have been surrendered to the FBI. If a financial institution breaches the gag order, it faces criminal penalties. And finally, the FBI will no longer be required to report to Congress how often they have used the National Security Letters."

NewsForge | Getting open source into public libraries
A great article on what is going to be one of my upcoming projects. I firmly believe that public libraries should be aiding open source software by providing it to the public. Open source programs and public libraries should be working hand in hand to demonstrate that there are legitimate alternatives to expensive software. Plus libraries with limited budgets, meaning all of us, need to be exploring open source software for our own uses. Knowledge of free software cannot be a bad thing to have.

Boston.com -- Forget book sales; libraries find eBay
I had been considering EBay sales for some of our booksale items for awhile now, but never got around to arranging it. The mention of $15 per title has me very intrigued, since we only charge $1 at our booksale. Our booksales do very well for us, due to the large number of donated bestsellers we get from the community. I will have to dig in the boxes of books that don't move in our sales and see what gems we can sell online...
